Hancock County, Mississippi – (April 16, 2020)
Stennis International Airport is one of 73 Mississippi Airports slated to receive funding from the recently signed 2020 CARES Act. The CARES Act, written in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, includes a portion of funds dedicated to economic relief – specifically to U.S. airports.
The CARES Act increases the existing Airport Improvement Program (AIP) to 100% of federal funding. Normally, airports are required to provide a match for the funding in order to receive the grant. This relief is intended to allow projects already slated for construction to continue.
As a General Aviation (GA) airport, Stennis International Airport is slated to receive $69,000 in funding, which was determined based on the airport’s category as a regional airport.
“We are very grateful for the funding awarded in light of the CARES Act related to COVID-19” said Chanse Watson, Stennis International Airport Director. “We intend to use these funds in the best interest of our customers and our community”.
Funds should be made available to airports in April with additional guidance and instructions.
