Hancock County, MS (April 28, 2020) - Stennis International Airport was recently awarded grant funding totaling nearly $3 Million to support the continued growth and development of the Hancock County airport. The funding is awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Improvement Program (AIP) as well as the AIP Supplemental Appropriation Program
Stennis will receive $2.77 million for an apron expansion of approximately 140,000 square feet. This will support the growing need for tenant ramp space and support third-party investment in new hangar space.
In addition, $150,000 was awarded to complete an update of the Airport’s master plan. This master plan update will support the ongoing and rapid strategic growth and development of the airport and complete needed infrastructure, planning, and sustainability analysis.
“The FAA is an important partner of Stennis International Airport and we thank the leadership in the Jackson (MS) District and regional FAA offices for working with us to secure this funding. Of course, this funding would not be available without the leadership of our federal delegation. A big thank you to all of them for their continued and ongoing support for Stennis International Airport” said Chanse Watson, Airport Director. “Senator Wicker, Senator Hyde-Smith and Congressman Palazzo work tirelessly to provide national-level support for economic development on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This funding will enable Stennis to continue to keep pace with our rapid growth for the benefit of our community, state and nation”.
Each of the grants are also supported by the recently enacted Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act Airport Grant Program which will cover local match to fund the projects at 100% federal share.
